Do It Yourself (DIY) Chapter #2

In Do It Yourself (DIY) Chapter #1, we discussed that becoming a DIY artist was “going into business for yourself”.  That’s certainly not for “everyone” but you can choose what you do yourself and what jobs you give to others.  The real important thing is understanding ALL the different tasks that need to be done and making sure they get done.

Here’s a quick list…. Do you understand all these concepts and jobs? :

  1. Copyrights: master rights, rights in the music, syncronisation (inc. YouTube videos), performance rights.
  2. Recording process
  3. Pressing process
  4. Publishing and neighbouring rights
  5. Product management: Radio single? 2 Radio singles .. followed by an album?
  6. Promotional and marketing plans and budgets. Radio PR budget. Print PR budgets. Online PR budgets.
  7. Booking
  8. Touring
  9. etc

We’re not saying that you won’t get signed by a label and a booking agent, but if you make DIY your life-style, inform yourself and build a strong team of people around you, your chances of getting signed (if that’s what you want) just got much, much better…
